Pre-Retirement Tour Info Here!Watermen meet to plan possible law suit against stateMembers of theVirginia Watermen's Association met in Kilmarnock Wednesday, April 9 to listen as White Stone attorney Lee Anne Washington discussed their legal options. Chafing under increasingly stringent regulations by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, the Watermen are considering a class action suit to force the Commonwealth to attack what Washington called "the root cause" of watermen's problems - pollution in Chesapeake Bay. Washington said more study is needed, but that she believes the Watermen would have a good chance of achieve standing before the court to sue the state. "The Virginia Constitution grants us the right to clean water and the use of the state's natural resources," Washington said. "I know watermen haven't always been on the side of environmentalists and sport fishermen, but on this issue we need to work together," he said. Both Place and Washington said Virginia may be vulnerable on this issue because it - along with Maryland, DC, and Pennsylvania, entered into a federal consent degree eight years ago to clean up the Bay by 2010. The meeting was well attended. Though no one representing Northumberland or Lancaster counties was present, Rep. Rob Wittman (1-VA) and State Senator Richard Stuart (R-29) both sent representatives.
