Kilmarnock Museum to produce documentary

Kilmarnock started as a crossroads and today, is anything but ordinary. A documentary film will capture the history of this small town.

The images and artifacts housed in the Kilmarnock Museum, along with stories told by long-time residents, will soon make their way to the video screen. The museum has begun work on “Kilmarnock, Virginia: Living History,” a half-hour documentary telling the town’s history.

“This project will serve two important purposes,” said museum director Carroll Lee Ashburn. “It supports our mission of telling Kilmarnock’s story to a wider audience, and it will also serve as a fund-raising tool.”

MediaMax Video, of Northumberland, will produce the documentary in a joint venture with the museum. The program will be packaged on DVD and sold directly to the public, with profits going to the museum.

MediaMax Video produced “The Museums Of Virginia’s Northern Neck” and “The Vineyards of Virginia’s Northern Neck” in 2007, and last year produced the new visitor center video for Menokin.

“Kilmarnock has a rich history and I think this documentary will be something visitors and residents alike will want as a keepsake,” said MediaMax Video president Mark Huffman.

The documentary will focus on Kilmarnock’s role as a commercial center of the Northern Neck, and make use of many of the archival photographs that the museum has collected over the years. The images tell the story of Kilmarnock’s development from a crossroads community into a thriving commercial center in the early 20th century.

“Many people may not realize it, but Kilmarnock once had hotels and movie theaters,” Ashburn said. “Even people who have lived here for a long time may be surprised as what they learn from watching this documentary.”

“Kilmarnock, Virginia: Living History” is currently in production with release targeted for spring 2009.
