When Pigs Fly Opens In Burgess

When Pigs Fly, the new shop that opened recently on Route 200 in Burgess, has nothing to do with pigs and nothing to do with flying, except perhaps, “flights of fancy.”

The shop is a delight for those looking for an unusual gift.

“We’re really a general gift store, and we do stock a wide range of items,” said Linda George, who moved to Reedville earlier this year from Spotsylvania County.

“We have wind chimes, home decorating items, greeting cards and seasonal merchandise, among other things.”

The shop’s eclectic merchandise includes books, small toys, Christmas ornaments, and handmade items like refrigerator magnets. There are also special birthday, anniversary and even teachers’ gifts.

The store will also feature a service that assists customers who want to sell their own items on eBay. Linda has done this for other clients in Spotsylvania, before moving to the Northern Neck, buying and selling both domestically and overseas.

“They can bring in their item and I’ll photograph it, help them price it, post it online and monitor the bidding. When it sells we can pack it and ship it for them,” she said.

So, where did the name “When Pigs Fly” come from?

“I had a friend who was always using that expression,” Linda said.

“When I was moving all this merchandise into the building I said I would probably going to be unpacking until pigs flew. My mother said ‘you’re not going to call the store that!’ I hadn’t thought about it until then, but it seemed like a good name.”

“When Pigs Fly is located on Jessie DuPont Memorial Highway in Burgess, across from Burton’s Heating and Air Conditioning. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
