Rappahannock River Waterfowl Show

The Rappahannock River Waterfowl Show, scheduled this year for March 19-21 at White Stone, is nothing like the Westminster Dog Show.

The wild geese in this show don't do tricks, they simply look beautiful on canvas or in the form of a carving or sculpture. The annual event brings together one of Virginia's largest gatherings of wildlife artisans.

The event is a major fundraising source for the White Stone Volunteer Fire Department, which also hosts the show.

Advance tickets are required for the Friday night preview and show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $8 for a two-day pass.

The show features original paintings, prints and life-sized carvings, decoys for both display and hunting, photography, taxidermy and exquisite bronze sculptures. Exhibitors from up and down the east coast make this a truly unique event, with many exhibitors returning year after year.

The show began in 1980 with 30 exhibitors scheduled to present. However, a huge snow storm hit the Northern Neck the day before and only six exhibitors were able to make it. Undeterred, the show went on and has done so year after year since.
