Northumberland YMCA seeks stimulus funds for new facility

Back To YMCA Update Page Back To NorthernNeckToday.com

As you well know the Northumberland Family YMCA is currently raising funds to provide the first full family YMCA facility in Northumberland County. The tough economic times have provided a unique opportunity for this fundraising effort. The Board of Management has submitted a request to Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, for matching funds of $1.5 million in stimulus funding. Through this request process, local volunteers have met with and gained the support from Delegate Albert Pollard, State Senator Richard Stuart and Congressman Rob Whitman.

The volunteers believe that the YMCA project fits well within the scope and purpose of the Economic Stimulus Bill, by meeting the following criteria:

- Construction will provide trade jobs for 9-12 months

- The new facility will provide approximately 60-70 full and part time employment opportunities

- The current program offerings will expand tremendously, allowing the Y to service many more families throughout the year

- The new facility will allow the YMCA to become the leading community organization for health & wellness

- The new facility project will be eco-friendly, by utilizing soon-to-be vacant school buildings, incorporating energy efficient utility systems when possible, and requiring minimal work by heavy machinery

- The new facility will provide community partnership opportunities with the first and only public swimming pool, making swimming lessons by the American Red Cross possible for every school age child

Although much support has been gained from local government officials, we now ask for your help in the final decision making days for allocating Virginia State Stimulus Funding. Please use the link below to contact Governor Kaine, and express your support over this project and the request for state funding. Once submitting your note to the Governor, forward this email on to as many people as possible, and ask for their support as well.

You may write your own personal note or simply copy and paste the following message into the text box provided on the website. If you choose to write a personal note, please be sure to include some of the information listed above to show the ongoing benefits from obtaining stimulus funding.

Dear Governor Kaine,

I understand my local Northumberland Family YMCA has submitted a request for matching $1.5 million in state stimulus funding. Please know I am in full support of this request, as I know this project will not only create new jobs through construction, but will provide approximately 60-70 ongoing employment opportunities, both full and part time, for local residents. In addition, the new YMCA will be the first and only full service family facility in Northumberland County providing health, wellness and recreational opportunities for the entire community. The plans also call for the only public swimming pool in the county, which will allow the local Red Cross to offer swim lessons to children and adults. This is especially important for a community with over 400 miles of shoreline.

Please accept this letter as a show of support for providing matching $1.5 million in stimulus funding to the Northumberland Family YMCA. I know it would not just benefit me, but the entire Northumberland Community as well.

Thank You.

The Northumberland Family YMCA volunteers, staff and program participants thank you in advance for your show of support. We all look forward to the grand opening of a much needed family YMCA facility in our community.
