The Northumberland Family YMCA says it is moving closer to its financial goal, which will enable it to renovate the present Northumberland High School Gym into a 22-thousand square foot, full service facility.

GENEROUS PLEDGE - Betty Hall, left, joins Carolyn and David Scarbrough of Heathsville outside the Northumberland High School Gym, the future home of the Northumberland Family YMCA. The Scarbroughs' unrestricted gift of $75,000 puts the project another big step closer to reality.

David and Carolyn Scarbrough of Heathsville have pledged a $75,000 unrestricted gift to go toward turning the gym and 16 surrounding acres into a state of the art YMCA campus.

“We are deeply appreciative of David and Carolyn’s generous gift. This brings us another step closer to our $3.6 million Capital Campaign goal,” said Betty Hall, Chairman of the Capital Campaign Committee. “It illustrates their belief in this project and devotion to their adopted home.”

The Scarbroughs moved to Northumberland more than three decades ago, and have been active participants in the county’s business and civic community ever since. It’s one reason they feel so strongly about this project.

“Northumberland County really needs this,” David Scarbrough said. “Not only will this be a wonderful facility, but the YMCA is the one organization that can use it to benefit nearly everyone in some way.”

“With this new facility, the YMCA can not only increase its services for children, but it will also be able to expand its offers for older adults,” Carolyn Scarbrough added. “It will meet a critical need, and it’s hard to think of another organization with the potential to touch so many people in a positive way.”

The Northumberland Family YMCA has signed a 50-year lease with the county for the high school gym and adjacent acreage. It is currently raising money for the renovation, and Hall says the Scarbroughs’, and previously announced gifts, have sparked strong interest in the community.

“We look forward with excitement and anticipation to other members of the community joining the Scarbroughs in making significant commitments,” Hall said. “Gifts may be in the form of one-time donations or through pledge commitments stretched over a five-year term of stock, cash, land or a variety of other asset transfers.”

Hall said anyone considering making a gift can contact her at her office in Burgess, 804-453-3701, or can get in touch with Cristian Shirilla at the YMCA office in Heathsville 804-580-4116 or 580-8901.
